Kokomo, Ind. – Down by one with one second left on the clock, Junior guard Trequan Spivey stepped up and made the game-winning free throw to give No. 13 IU Kokomo a thrilling 62-61 victory over IU Southeast on Tuesday evening at Cougar Gym.
Three Cougars scored in double figures, led by senior guard Akil McClain with 23 points going 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line. Junior guard Trequan Spivey followed with 12 points, while sophomore forward Darian Porch added 10 points and a game-high of three assists.
IU Kokomo outrebounded the Grenadiers 41 to 39, led by junior forward Desean Hampton with 10. The Cougars forced IU Southeast into nine turnovers, while logging three blocks and four steals.
IU Southeast got out of the gates strong, taking the largest lead of the game at 18-8 with 9:07 remaining in the first half. At that point in the contest, IU Kokomo had hit only 5 of its 23 attempts.
The Cougars then chipped away at the lead, using four straight three-pointers coming from Akil McClain and Ditwan (DT) Gary to tie the game at 24-24 with four minutes remaining in the first half.
The contest was then held within two points between both teams until the final seconds when IU Southeast's Derrick Webb secured two points to put the Grenadiers up by three, 33-30, going into the break.
IU Kokomo continued to push offensively taking an eight-point advantage, 48-40, halfway through the second half after Akil McClain executed his fourth three-pointer of the contest.
The Grenadiers battled their way back to take a three-point lead over the Cougars with one-minute left to play. Trequan Spivey would get IU Kokomo within one at 61-60 with 38 seconds left to play.
After a missed three-pointer opportunity from IU Southeast, the Cougars came back into possession of the ball forcing the Grenadiers into a defensive foul to give IU Kokomo's Trequan Spivey three shots at the foul line. With one second left on the clock, Spivey made two of his three shots to give IU Kokomo a 62-61 victory over IU Southeast.
