William H. “Bill” Jackson, 91, Kokomo, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2019, at Northwoods Village in Kokomo. He was born January 18, 1928, in Gary, IN, the son of the late Harry Walter & Marguerite Opal (Hoffman) Jackson. On May 3, 1952, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, he married Helen (Morris), who preceded him in death on April 5, 2010.
Bill was the 1946 valedictorian of Wolcott High School, and in 1968 he received his AA degree in Accounting with a 4.0 GPA from Indiana University. He was drafted and served in the United States Army during WWII, then joined the reserves where he was called to serve in the Korean war earning the rank of Staff Sargent. He was severely wounded and received the Purple Heart. He retired as the supervisor of the Cost Department at Delco Electronics with 34 years of service. Bill was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Kokomo Shrine Club and served as lead driver for the Shriners Children’s Hospital where he drove over 200 trips. He held many roles in the Delco Fishing Club where he served as treasurer, cook, and organizer for over 30 years. He also served as treasurer for Main Street United Methodist Church and Bible Baptist Church. He was co-owner of Jackson Junction-Antiques and Glass, Mini T driver for Shriners, an assistant Scout Master, Haworth Band Booster, and a volunteer for AARP as a tax preparer.
Bill was an all-around outdoor sportsman who loved to fish, hunt, waterski, golf, and shoot guns. He was a member of the Black Powder Gun Club and NRA. He loved to sit on his front porch and enjoy nature. Bill helped so many people with so many projects, lent his abilities to many families, friends, and strangers alike. His great sense of humor never failed him which made people love even more. He loved spending time with family and friends. He gave the best bear hugs and will be greatly missed.
Bill is survived by his children, Dan K. (Joni) Jackson, Liberty Township, OH, Judy A. (Dan) Swenson, Calimesa, CA, Patty L. (Les) Willis, Russiaville, and Mary A. (Bill) Burkholder, Kokomo; grandchildren, Kate (Peter) McCoy, Steve Jackson, Jason (Steffanie) Swenson, Sarah (Laurence) Allison, Amber (Chris) Adams, Sara Willis, Joe (Liz) Willis, Lindsey (Steve) Ackerman, Heather (Cisco) Gonzales, Danielle (Jon) Hendricks, Brooke (Andrew) Rosborough, Betsy (Jeff) Hart, Blayne (Renee) Burkholder, and Brittani (Coty) Calvin, along with 27 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Helen; son, Steve J. Jackson; brother, Don; and sisters, Judy, and Joyce.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 East Main Street, Russiaville with Chaplin John Murdoch officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum with military honors provided by the United States Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, the American Heart Association, or the Diabetes Foundation.
