Harvey A. Bates, 76, Kokomo, died at 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at his residence. He was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Maynardsville, Tenn., the son of Joseph E. and Lucy E. (Sands) Bates. He married Dorothy J. (Welcher) Bates on Dec. 31, 1949, in Kokomo, and she survives.

He retired from Cuneo Press after 30 years of service, where he worked from 1949 to 1979 as a machine operator. He then worked as a school custodian at Wallace and Elwood Haynes until he retired in 1994. He was a member of New Life Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his loving family - wife, Dorothy Bates of Kokomo; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Cheryle Bates of Kokomo; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mark Milner of Kokomo; daughter, Janet Bates of Phoenix, Ariz.; close family friends, Bobby and Cheryl Clawson of Kokomo; five grandchildren and spouses: Jennifer and Chris Waynescott of Greensboro, N.C., Adam and Hope Bates of Indianapolis, Aimee and David Jenkins of Mooresville, N.C., Aaron and Beth Bates of Vincennes, Andrew Bates and fiancee Tabbitha Bratcher both of Kokomo; three great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Joshua Harvey Waynescott of Greensboro, N.C., Kayla Bates of Indianapolis; two brothers, Ray and Joe Bates both of Kokomo; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Eva Ward of Tega Cay, S.C., Betty and Joe Bannon of Kokomo and Margarett Bates of Kokomo; also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Claude Bates.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ellers Mortuary Webster St. Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. with the Rev. Don Gifford and his son, the Rev. Roger Bates. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Guardian Angel Hospice or American Cancer Society, envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
