Cornhole—the Midwestern pastime that has become a national phenomenon is not a sport many think about in the winter. But it’s time to brush up on your toss because Home Depot, The Andersons, Adler Feed Express and Ivy Tech Community College Alumni Association are hosting the 2nd annual Winter Cornhole Classic. The tournament will take place at the Kokomo Event & Conference Center, Saturday, Feb. 23. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.; competition begins at 10 a.m. Registration prior to Feb. 8 gains the team the early-bird rate of $30 – price includes shirt. The cost after this date is $40 per team of two players. First place prize is $500; second place, $200; third place, $100. Participants can register online, by mail, or at the door the day of the event. Registration is limited to the first 100 teams.

“We wanted to put together a fun event that would get people off the couch and out of the house during those dreary winter days,” said Miriam Thomas, alumni relations coordinator for Ivy Tech. “Everyone is playing it – at backyard barbecues, at tailgate parties and at the campground.”

Thomas said that the event is not limited to Ivy Tech alumni and invites everyone who plays corn hole to come out for a fun day raising money for student activity scholarships. “The money raised from entry fees will help fund opportunities for students to attend conferences and the proceeds from registration fees will benefit Student Life and Development. “Ivy Tech is committed to providing its students with educational and cultural activities outside of the classroom,” said Michelle Simmons, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “The money raised from registration fees from this event will help us fund activities such as taking groups of students to visit an art gallery, tour our Nation’s capital, see a live theatre performance, or attend a regional student leadership conference. All of these kinds of activities enrich the lives of our students.”

The event is sponsored by Home Depot, Adlers Feed Express, The Andersons and the Ivy Tech Alumni Association. Co-sponsors include Whiskey Creek Wood Fire Grill, Quality Plumbing & Heating, Regions Insurance Group Inc., Beck’s Hybrids, Ray’s Auto Parts, All Seasons General Contracting, and Parrett’s Meat Processing.
