William T. Kerby

William T. Kerby, 96, Greentown, died at 8:58 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at Community Regional Hospital, Kokomo. William was born April 7, 1919 in Galveston to Leo F. and Lydia (Crandall) Kerby.

He graduated from Greentown High School in 1938. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving in the Pacific during World War II, he was stationed at Quantico, Cuba, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and was a chief radio man and electronics instructor in the Great Lakes. He was a member of the American Legion Post #317. Mr. Kerby enjoyed traveling, and had traveled to all 50 states.

Survivors include nephews, Stephen E. (Jean) Kerby, Galveston, James M. Kerby, Elwood, and Thomas F. (Carolyn) Kratzer, Floirda; great-nieces and nephews, Ginger Brankle, Susan Kerby and Jerry (Jill) Brankle, and Barbara (John) Ragan, Shannon Kratzer and Bryan Kratzer; great-great-nieces and nephews, Trisha (Ben) Gordon, Jennifer(Will) Mays, Amiee Ragan, Ryan Brankle, Scott Brankle, Chase Brankle and Shelby Brankle.

He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Rosemary (she preceded him in death in June 1996); sister, Eva Kratzer; brother, Gene Kerby; nephew, William Kratzer; and niece, Garnet Brankle.

Pokrzywa

Margaret Louise (Wetzel) Pokrzywa, age 87 passed away at Sunday November 8, 2015 at North Woods Village, Kokomo In. Born August 14, 1928 in Mt Clare West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late David C and Mary Wetzel of Clarksburg West Virginia. She graduated from Victory High, Clarksburg W.VA in 1947. On October 25, 1947 she married Eugene Joseph Pokrzywa who proceeded her in death, January 03, 2010.

She was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening, plants and flowers, being with family and was a wonderful cook.

She was a member of Northview Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Metheny-Swigert Bible Class. She was a member of the Letter Carrier Auxillary #883, Clarksburg, past president of the Auxillary Letter Carrier Association and also local president for many years and received her 50 year pin. A life member of Lucinda Rose Auxillary #883, Clarksburg and past president. Past president of Victory High School Athletics Club 1968, Women of the Moose #409, memeber of the Friendship Club, American Legion #13 and also past president, member of Fraternal Order of

Eagles Auxillary, Lake of the Elk, Eastern Star Queen Esther chapter #11, Order of the America #3, White Shrine of Jerusalem, charter member of the Nutter Fort Womens Club and member of the Clarksburg Womens Club. She volunteered at the VA Hospital for over 25 years. She also belonged to the Bingo Club, was a lifetime member of the Senior Citizen’s and a member of the Kitty Edwards Club and enjoyed traveling with club members.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers Robert Allen Wetzel and Davy Lee Wetzel, one sister Lillie P Hamrick, and one great grandchild.

Survivors include four sons, Eugene Joseph Pokrzywa Jr., Ravens Gap GA., David Michael (Sandy) Pokrzywa, Kokomo, IN, Phillip Daniel (Deidra) Pokrzywa, Louisville, TN and Timothy Edward Pokrzywa, Clarksburg W.VA. Three grandchildren, Christa Pokrzywa, Kokomo IN, Martin Gene Pokrzywa, Ravens Gap, GA, Cheri (Alan) Engebretson, Statesboro GA., and 6 great-grandchildren Carter Gene Pokrzywa, Ravens Gap, GA, Jenaka, Talon and Milla Hawkins, Matthew McKendrick and Zane Renteria of Statesboro GA. She is a also survived by two sister-in-laws, Dorothy Wetzel, Helen Pokrzywa and brother-in-law Bud Hamrick all of Clarksburg area.

Mary L. Short

Mary Louise Short, 79, of Kokomo, passed away at 5:39 PM, Sunday, November 8, 2015 at her residence. She was born on August 8, 1936 in Kokomo, Indiana to the late Roy E. and Thelma (Stansbury) Harper. She married Robert B. Short on June 23, 1957 in Kokomo and he preceded her in death on March 31, 2003.

Mary Louise graduated from Kokomo High School in 1954. She was employed with Eriks Chevrolet for 27 years in administration. She loved her job and was known as a people person. She loved to volunteer in her community of Kokomo. She was a member of various local home economic clubs, served as president of her condo association, 50 year plus member of Tri Kappa Sorority, an active volunteer for election polls, active in her widow’s group, and was a member of her high school girls club for over 61 years. She also enjoyed travelling, socializing with friends, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mary Louise is survived by three sons, Mark (Denise) Short, Lafayette, Mike (Marcie) Short, Indianapolis, and Matt (Mary) Short, Kalamazoo, Michigan; four grandchildren, Kiel Short, Sam Short, Robert (Stephanie) Short, and Victoria Short.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Short; her parents; sister; Marilyn Kelley; and niece, Sandra Gamrath Macdonald.

John Blair

John Blair, age 90, passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Waterford Place Health Campus in Kokomo. He was born in Corvallis, Oregon to Dr. James Stewart Blair and Elizabeth Weller Blair. He was married to his beloved wife Jean Catherine Grosskoff on February 17, 1951, and is survived by her.

John, a longtime resident of Kokomo, was a local artist who spent over 60 years of his life creating one of a kind ceramic sculptures primarily of dogs, birds, other animals, and people. He was devoted to his wife’s Jean’s dedication and involvement in dog obedience training and assisted her in helping local residents train their dogs. He retired from American Standard, INC, as a foreman in the ceramics division.

John received a merit award as a member of the School Safety Patrol in the Chicago area, May 23, 1939 and then achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on January 26, 1943. John honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II from September 23, 1943 to May 14, 1946 as a member of the medical corps. He earned Victory and Area Campaign medals. After the war, John earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Like his mother, Elizabeth, John enjoyed nature, and during his later years regularly fed the birds and the squirrels and tended to other wildlife that visited his property. Throughout his life John enjoyed current events and politics, art, spending time with his family, and dining at Bob Evens. He was a cross word puzzle enthusiast, loved a good debate, and was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. John was also an excellent chess, pool, and billiards player, and enjoyed playing golf.

John is survived by his wife, Jean Catherine Blair, his children, Catherine Blair Kellogg and Michael John Blair, his son-in-law, Dr. Steven Kellogg, his grandchildren, Kyla Blair Kellogg and Payton Lynn Blair, his nieces, Su Kenny and Jan Stewart, and his nephew, James Blair.

John is preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Jim Blair, his sister-in-law, Lori Blair, and his parents James and Elizabeth Blair.

James D. Williams, 68 of Kokomo, died November 2, 2015 at the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, IN.

Mr. Williams was born in Pensacola, Florida on May 17, 1947. He was a graduate of the Fort Walton Beach High School. From 1968 until 1970, Mr. Williams served his country by serving in the United States Army in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge from the service, Mr. James was a construction contractor until 2005.

Evelyn M. Peterson

Evelyn M. Peterson, 78, of Kokomo, went to be with the Lord at 5:09 AM, Sunday, November 8, 2015, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo. She was born June 12, 1937, in Plattsmouth, NE, to Clark and Mildred (Vincent) Markham. She graduated from High School in Plattsmouth, NE, and later earned a degree in English in Clarksville, IN. She was a self-employed beautician out of her home for many years. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and had attended Main Street United Methodist Church in Kokomo. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, canning, spending time with family pets, and especially spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Lynn Peterson of Kokomo; daughter, Mindy Peterson-Shoulders and husband Charles of Martinsville; brothers, Donald, Fred, and Bob Markham, all of Plattsmouth, NE; grandchildren, Jordan Wesley Reynolds, Ashley Nicole Reynolds-Minor, Kayla Marie Shoulders, and Austin Robert Shoulders; and several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, John Scott Peterson, one sister, and one brother.

Joyce E. Lamb

Joyce E. Lamb, 75, Greentown, passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at Community Howard Regional Hospital, Kokomo. She went to be with her Lord with her husband and children at her side. Joyce was born March 16, 1940 to Morris Emerson and Mary (Cornelia) Evans in Elwood, Indiana.

She married Daniel Lamb on June 6, 1958 in Phlox, Indiana.

Joyce graduated from Eastern High School in 1958. She was a member of Faith Community Church in Phlox. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing computer games. Her greatest joys and her life revolved around her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Lamb. Her children, Dewayne (Karen) Lamb, Christina (Dave) King, Mark and (Kira) Lamb, Kimberly (David) Macy and Elizabeth (Heath) Meyers and 11 grandchildren.

Chamness

Richard D. Chamness, 82, Greentown, passed away at 1:52 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at his son’s home in Greentown. He was born Aug. 29, 1933, in Randolph County, the son of Hugh and Osie (Jones) Chamness. He was married Oct. 20, 1951, to Anna Mae (Ringo) Chamness, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 29, 2013.

Mr. Chamness had worked at Chrysler Corp., retiring after 30 years of service on July 31, 1990. He had been the president of UAW Local 1166 from 1967 until 1980.

He volunteered as a driver for the Red Cross and was the director of the Crisis Center for 30 years. He had been involved in helping promote many of the charity organizations in Howard County.

Survivors are his sons, Rick (Belinda Cauble) Chamness, Tipton, Dennis (Angela) Chamness, Greentown, and Larry (Vickie) Chamness, Kokomo; brother, Jot Chamness, Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one stepgrandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter.

Anita J. Ferguson

Anita J. (Norris) Ferguson, 51, formerly of Peru and Amboy, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015at the home of her father, Larry L. Norris I, after a long battle with melanoma brain cancer. She was born March 18, 1964 in Danville, Illinois, the daughter of Larry and Arlie (Cassel) Norris.

Anita grew up in the Kokomo area, were she went to Bon Air Middle School and graduated from Maconaquah High School in 1982, in the late 80’s, Anita was a truck driver. It was there she met the love of her life, fellow truck driver James Ferguson. They married in 1990 and in 1991 Anita gave birth to their twins, Charles R. and Chandra L. Ferguson. Even after their divorce a few years later, they remained the best of friends until his death in 2013.

Anita enjoyed playing disc golf, touring ghost towns, taking long walks with her dogs, four-wheeling in the mountains of Colorado and digging her feet in the sand on the Florida beaches.

Anita is survived by her children, Charles (Jennifer) Ferguson of Kokomo, Chandra (Jacob) Stith of Sims; parents, Larry Norris I of Miami County, Arlie Norris of Kokomo; two grandsons, Brayden and Connor Stith of Sims; two sisters, Lona Hernandez of Kokomo, Julie (Bruce) Hanke of Amboy; brother, Larry Norris II of Kokomo. Anita also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends and her beloved dogs, Fawn and Buttercup.

We would like to give special thanks to Anita’s two sisters, Lona and Julie for the many hours and days spent taking care of their “Little Sis”. Joyce Ann (Greenwood) Trueblood, 58, passed away in her Florida Home on November 6, 2015. She was born on June 2, 1957 to Lonnie E. & Patricia (Hinkle) Greenwood in Kokomo, IN.

Joyce attended Kokomo High School and loved taking care of her grandchildren and spending time with her family.

Candace K. Tetrick

Candace Kay “Candy” Tetrick, 59, of Kokomo, passed away at 12:44 AM, Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Community Howard Regional Hospital. She was born on January 8, 1956 in Kokomo, Indiana to the late Herbert Wintrode and Thelma (Edwards) Wintrode, and she survives. She married Ronald Tetrick on June 21, 1975 in Kokomo and he survives.

Candy graduated from Haworth High School in 1974. She went on to earn a Bachelor Degree of Arts in Education from Indiana University Kokomo and a Master Degree of Arts in Education from IUPUI. She retired from City of Firsts Federal Credit Union after 23 years as a teller. From 1997 to 1998, Candy was involved in organizing a union for the employees of City of Firsts FCU known as Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU). She served as union steward for 15 years until she retired. She took great pride in serving her fellow co-workers in this way. Candy was a part of the gospel singing group, The New Creation from 1973-1974. She was a member of Russiaville Friends Meeting and longtime former member of Courtland Avenue Friends Church. Candy also enjoyed crafts and was very creative.

Candy is survived by her husband of 40 years, Ronald Tetrick; mother, Thelma Wintrode; brother-in-law, Robert (Geri) Tetrick; niece, Megan Jo (Brad Hopewell) Tetrick; nephew, John Robert Tetrick; great nephew, Julian Hopewell; chosen brother, Doug Shrock; chosen sisters, Kathy Croxford, Marsha Maple, Mona Walters, Jeri Learner, Emily Shrock, and Euliane Delgado; chosen nieces and nephews, Karla Learner, Michele Learner, Rochelle (Walters) O’Neil, Melissa (Walters) Bollinger, Daryl Maple, Jason Maple, Samantha Shrock, Cory Shrock, and Nick Shrock.

Jerome “Jerry” Funke, 65 of Zionsville and formerly of Tipton died at 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Zionsville Meadows. He was born in Elwood on March 10, 1950 to John C. and Eva R. (Johannes) Funke. He married Susan E. Means on August 23, 1973 and she survives.

Jerry had worked at Perfect Circle and also at Kokomo Grain. He was a 1968 graduate of Tipton High School and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; siblings Elizabeth J. Ortman of Kokomo, Mary L. Scheidler Brauer of Greenwood, John R. Funke and wife Barbara of Tipton, and Patricia A. and husband Norbert Tebbe of Tipton; a brother-in-law Marc Means and a sister-in-law Lyn Means; long with several nieces and nephews.

Jean E. Garmon, 66 of Tipton died at 2:18 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at I.U. North Hospital in Carmel. She was born on September 17, 1949 in Noblesville to Willard B. & Glenna Irene (Wood) Venable. She married Arcy Garmon on December 23, 1974 and he preceded her in death on September 11, 2013.

Jean would be called a homemaker. However, she was so much more than just that. She spent her time doing whatever she could to make others happy. She was truly an amazing mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed cooking for others, teaching her grandchildren to cook so her legacy would carry on, and traveling around to be a part of her loved ones lives. Her greatest joy in life was found in always being together with her best friend, her beloved husband. Their best memories were made during their times together at Silver Lake.

Jean is survived by eight children, Cathy Thurman and husband Ronnie, Marion, Phillip Garmon, Kansas City, Missouri, Deb Kirkpatrick and husband Tom, Van Buren, Melanie Bickhart and husband Phillip, Tampa, Florida, Wendy Gibbs, Indianapolis, Tony Biddle, Noblesville, Mike Biddle, Greentown, Tina Fletcher and husband Tim, Carmel; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Venable, Carmel, Paul Venable and wife Rhonda, Noblesville; a sister, Amy Venable, Noblesville; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Venable, Carmel. Betty E. Burris

Betty E. Burris, age 93, of Warsaw, Indiana passed away on Saturday November 7, 2015 quietly at Mason Healthcare in Warsaw. She was born on March 9, 1922 in Tipton, Indiana to Earl and Minnie (Shadday) Roe. Betty married Vernon L. Burris in 1937 and he later passed away in 1999.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tipton, Indiana. Betty was a resident of Tipton for 27 years prior to moving to a farm in Urbana, IN. Later in her life she moved to Leesburg, Indiana on Lake Tippecanoe where she enjoyed fishing and spending time on the lake. Betty enjoyed every day of her life and was very thankful for all that she had.

Betty is survived by her son, Terry Burris of Fort Wayne, IN. Also surviving is a brother, Gilbert (Ruth) Roe of Tipton and a sister, Margaret Taylor of Anderson, IN along with seven grandchildren and several great and great great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon, a son Michael Kent Burris and her siblings; Dorothy Roe, Mary Cochrill, Robert Roe, Phyllis Parnell, and Leslie Roe.

Tanis N. Atkisson, 74, Kokomo, passed away at 9:47 am on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at her home. She was born on September 16, 1941, in Kokomo. She was raised the daughter of Gilbert & Malinda (Siler) Hudson. On September 2, 1961, she married John Robert “Bob” Atkisson, and he survives.

Tanis was a homemaker who loved spending time with her grandchildren and her grand-dogs.

Tanis is survived by her husband, Bob Atkisson, Kokomo; children, Thomas L. Atkisson, Kokomo, and Jayne M. Atkisson, Indianapolis; grandchildren, James Atkisson, Justin Atkisson, Dillon Atkisson, Kyle Atkisson and Konner Atkisson; brothers, Jimmy (Susie) Hudson, Kokomo, and Glen (sherry) Hudson, Kokomo; brother-in-law, Carl Atkisson, Burlington and sister-in-law, Linda Gifford, Kokomo.

Tanis was preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dorothy & James Atkisson, brothers, Fawn Tolley, and Richard Hudson, and brother-in-law, Richard Atkisson.

John B. King

John B. King, age 63, passed away on Tuesday November 10, 2015 at his home in Tipton. He was born on February 26, 1952 in Tipton, the son of Mary Beheler.

John was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame football. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren whom he loved deeply. John had served proudly with the US Marines from 1975 to 1978, He was employed as a warehouse supervisor for Syndicated Sales in Kokomo from 1986 until his retirement in 2010 and was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his former spouse, Patti Luttrell of Tipton, his son John C. and his wife Ashley King of Nappanee, IN, two step children; Tessa and husband Jeff Letzinger and Corey Montgomery. Also surviving are two grandchildren; Phoenix and Chance King, his siblings; Velma Brannum, Bill Dunbar, Cindy Dunbar and Susie York all of Tipton along with several nieces, nephews and dear friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers in law; Willie Brannum and Robert York, a nephew Eric Gathman and a great niece Jessica Pasco.

Dawn R. Carl

Dawn Renae Carl, 44, Kokomo, went to be with our Lord at 8:30 AM Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Rockford Lane Group Home. She was born March 11, 1971 to Donald Carl Sr. and Harriet Joann Suter.

Dawn was involved with many Special Olympics activities; with bowling and bocce being her favorite. She was part of Sunshine Friends, and was a member of the Social Club that met on Monday evenings. She had a collection of purses, enjoyed dancing to country rock music, and liked having her phone books nearby. Dawn loved everybody and everybody loved her that knew her.

Preceding her in death is her father.

Surviving Dawn are her mother Harriet (companion James Pickering), sisters, LeQuetta Kennedy, Donna Griggs, and Valerie Duvall, brother Donald Carl Jr., many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family would like to thank Rockford Lane and Walnut Group Homes, and St. Joe Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Dawn.

A celebration of Life Ceremony will be Monday November 9, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Ellers Mortuary Webster Chapel, 3400 South Webster Street with Pastor Larry Richerdson officiating. Shirley H. Clouser

Shirley H. Clouser, 82, Simi Valley, CA - died Friday, September 25, 2015, at her home, with her family by her side. She was born February 12, 1933, in Greentown, Indiana; a daughter of Lucius and Vera (Strebin) Hensler. On September 21, 1952, in Greentown, she married Gene Clouser, who proceeded her in death.

She retired from Delco Electronics in September 1995. She was an active member of the Kokomo Civic Theater for several years.

Also surviving are three sons, Steven Clouser (Shirley) of Ontario, OH, Eric J. Clouser (Theresa) of Simi Valley, CA, Neil P. Clouser (Jennifer) Hilliard, OH, Six grandchildren: Rakita, Kristen, Michael, Ambonice, Evan, Kate. One brother, Larry Hensler of Kokomo and three sister’s, Sharon Gritton of Greentown, IN, Lynn Pratt of Ventura, CA, Janis Crume of Burlington, IN.

Her parents and one sister Joyce Myers of Kokomo preceded her in death.

Helen O. Robertson

Helen O. Robertson, 99, Monroe, Louisiana, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at her residence.

She graduated from Noblesville High School in Indiana. She moved to Monroe, Louisiana, in 1987 to be closer to her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Kokomo and faithfully attended Lea Joyner Memorial United Methodist Church in Monroe.

Survivors include her daughter, Beverly and husband Joe Jay; granddaughters, Melissa Pryor and husband Bryan, and Julie Hanks and husband Craig; and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Kaitlyn Pryor and Sage and Abbi Hanks.
