KPD seeking assistance in murder investigation

Department claims multiple individuals witnessed shooting at Miller’s Tavern

The Kokomo Police Department is seeking information from witnesses who may have seen a recent murder take place.

According to a KPD release, an ongoing investigation has shown that numerous individuals were in the area of Miller’s Tavern, 124 W. Elm St., at the time of the homicide of Mutee Burnett, 36. The shooting occurred on Aug. 11 at approximately 4:21 a.m.

The department is asking individuals with information relating to the incident to contact KPD Detective Scott Purtee 765-456-7322 or the KPD hotline 765-456-7017 with information regarding the case.

At the time of the shooting, officers responded to the area of Miller’s Tavern and found Burnett deceased in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The shooting, according to a release, occurred in the street near the tavern. The shooting also resulted in two females sustaining non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Angela Burnette, 43, sustained a gunshot wound to her foot, and Desiree James, 28, incurred a gunshot wound to her lower leg. Both victims were treated at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo.

In addition to calling Purtee or the KPD hotline, individuals with information relating to the case may qualify for a cash reward by calling Central Indiana Crime Stopper at 1-800-262-TIPS with an anonymous tip. The department has also asked the public not to speculate online or post comments on social media if they have information, but rather to contact the appropriate authorities.
