A Fairmount man was killed this morning in a multi-vehicle crash on State Road 22 and 700 East.

This morning around 6:02 a.m. deputies from the Howard County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of State Road and 700 East for reports of a multi-vehicle accident involving two passenger vehicles and a motorcycle.

A preliminary investigation by HCSO accident reconstructions indicated that Everett W. Phipps, 57, of Kokomo was driving eastbound on State Road 22 in a 2002 Chevy Astro van when he crossed the centerline, striking a westbound 2013 Dodge Dart driven by Ryan A. Fenstermaker, 38, of Gas City head-on. The results of that collision caused the Dodge Dart to spin 180 degrees and face the opposite direction of travel.

Following directly behind the Dodge Dart was a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Thomas E. Davis, 39, of Fairmount who struck the now wrong-way facing Dodge Dart head-on. As a result of that collision, Davis was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Howard County Coroner’s Office.

Both Phipps and Fenstermaker were transported to Howard Regional Health where they remain in stable condition at the time, according to a release from the HCSO.

This case is being treated as an OWI causing death investigation, as subsequent investigation indicated that Phipps operated his motor vehicle while intoxicated. Any necessary charges will be forwarded to the Howard County Prosecutor due to the nature of the injuries.

Howard County deputies were assisted at the scene by paramedics from Howard Regional Health, firefighters from the Greentown Fire Department, deputies from the Howard County Coroner’s Office and officers from the Howard County Emergency Management Agency. This accident remains under investigation, and anyone with further information is asked to contact Deputy Josh Myers at 765-614- 3482.
