The 2019 River States Conference Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ Poll has chosen IU Kokomo as the favorite this year. The poll featured voting from the 12 RSC volleyball head coaches.
IU Kokomo, which has won three of the last four RSC Championships, received 107 votes in the polling and eight of the possible 11 first-place votes. The Cougars won the 2018 RSC Volleyball Championship and RSC West Division with a record of 34-5 overall, 16-0 RSC. IU Kokomo has won 37 straight RSC regular-season matches dating back to 2016 with back-to-back undefeated conference regular seasons to date. The Cougars have been to the NAIA National Championship four straight years.
IU East was picked second in the preseason poll with 101 votes and the remaining three first-place votes. The Red Wolves are predicted to be the top team from the RSC East Division as the top vote-getter from that side of the conference. IU East was 23-9 overall, 12-4 RSC last year to win the division and take a playoff No. 1 seed.
IU Southeast earned the third spot in the poll with 86 votes. The Grenadiers were 26-8 overall and 11-5 RSC a year ago and joined IU Kokomo, Brescia (Ky.) University and Asbury (Ky.) University for the RSC Championships semifinals, which included four teams from the RSC West Division.
WVU Tech and Point Park (Penn.) University were next in the preseason poll hailing from the RSC East. WVU Tech (27-10, 10-6 in 2018) garnered 78 votes, and Point Park (19-12, 12-4 RSC) garnered 74 for fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the voting. Both were playoff teams in 2018.
Brescia received 70 votes for sixth in the poll followed by Asbury with 65 votes for seventh place. Brescia was 23-18 overall, 11-5 RSC and made an appearance in the NAIA National Championship as the RSC runner-up. Asbury was 20-14 overall, 10-6 RSC as a conference semifinalist.
University of Rio Grande (Ohio) took eighth in the poll and is once again predicted as a playoff team as the fourth team from the RSC East. The RedStorm got 46 votes this preseason.
