Fifteen softball players were named to the prestigious All-County Softball team last week as the 2019 softball season came to an end.

The varsity players were chosen by Howard County softball coaches based on athletic performance, athletic ability, and leadership skills. This year marks the 12th year for the team. The following information was provided by the ladies’ coaches.


Lauryn Hicks – Lauryn Hicks is a two-time first team All-State selection and was first team All-NCC this year. She will represent Kokomo in the Indiana All-Star game. She has committed to play softball at Northern Kentucky University where she will study nursing. This year she struck out 202 batters and at the plate batted .411 with four home runs, five doubles, and two triples.

Ellie Trine – Ellie Trine is a first team Academic All-State selection and a first team All-NCC selection. She will attend Trine University to play softball and earn an engineering degree. This year she batted .405 with four doubles and a triple.

Taylor Simmons – Taylor Simmons was a third team All-State selection as a junior, and is first team All-NCC this season. She is set to attend IUPUI in the fall to study nursing. She batted .412 this season with two home runs, nine doubles, and two triples.

Jannessa Reece – Jannessa Reece was a first team All-NCC selection as a sophomore. She batted .350 with two home runs and a triple. She also threw out six runners trying to steal from her catcher position.


Madelyn Delgado – Madelyn Delgado is a strong and knowledgeable softball player and a player who will play any position asked of her and perform at a high level. She is a great catcher with a strong arm, and when she is behind the plate, she controls the game. She makes every runner take note that she will not hesitate to gun them down. Her batting average is 391, and she was only was struck out twice all year.


Tori Turner – Tori Turner finished her senior season with a 0.602 batting average, six homeruns, and 25 RBI. She set school records for hits in a season (56) and runs in a season (49), as well as career RBI with (87). Turner is a three-year starter at second base with a career fielding percentage of 96 percent. She is an All-Hoosier Conference selection and was voted second team All-State. Turner will be representing Western in the North/South All-star game in Bloomington on June 22.

Karlyne Shepherd - Karlyne Shepherd completed her senior season with a 0.433 batting average, 45 hits, and 36 runs scored. She set school records with hits in a career (167) and runs scored in a career (131). Shepherd is a four-year middle infield starter with a career fielding percentage of 92 percent. She has been all-conference or all-conference honorable mention all four years in high school. Shepherd was voted All-State Honorable Mention this season.

Emma Key - Emma Key finished her junior season with a 0.485 batting average, 33 hits, 33 RBI, and 18 runs scored. She set school records in home runs for a season (11), home runs for a career (22), and RBI for a career (87). Key is a three-year letter winner at first base with a career fielding percentage of 99 percent. This is Key’s second year on the All-Howard County team.

Kinsey Smith - Kinsey Smith completed her junior season with a 0.467 batting average, 43 hits, and 40 RBI. She set a school record for doubles in a season (15). Smith is a three-year starter at the catcher position with a career fielding percentage of 99 percent. Smith was an All-Hoosier Conference selection this season.

Sadie Harding – Sadie Harding finished her sophomore season with a 0.595 batting average, 50 hits, 37 RBI, and 40 runs scored. She is a two-year starter at third base with a fielding percentage of 94 percent. Sadie was an All-Hoosier Conference selection this season and was voted All-State Honorable Mention.


Kendal Rooze - .524 batting average, 44 hits, 29 RBI, nine HR (school single-season record), 15 2B (school single-season record), three 3B, first team All-State, All Conference

Ellie Boyer - .471 batting average, 40 hits, 26 RBI, four HR, eight 2B, six 3B (school-single season record), third All-State, All Conference Honorable Mention.

Lexy Robinson - .429 batting average, 27 hits, 18 RBI, seven 2B, .964 fielding percentage, team’s most-improved player

Jaylyn Harrison - .400 batting average, 30 hits, 18 RBI, five 2B, three HR, 3.69 ERA, All Conference


Hope Smith - Hope Smith had a great year for the team. She was an anchor to the defense by catching every inning of every game. She also led the team in nearly every offensive category. Smith had a .549 batting average, breaking a school record, which included 15 doubles. She broke another school record in RBIs knocking in 38 on the season.
