Birthdays are a curious thing. As a child, you anticipate your birthday. You long for the day, the gifts and the attention. Then, as you get a little older and you’ve celebrated a few decades of birthdays, they tend to lose their appeal.
As an organization, though, 60 years is quite the accomplishment. We kicked off our #60to60 celebration last week at Meridian Park with a wonderful cookout for our friends and neighbors in the area. We had hot dogs (provided by White’s Meat Market), hamburgers, popcorn, drinks (provided by Coca-Cola Kokomo), chips (provided by Wal-Mart), dessert (provided by the Bona Vista Bistro), and all the fun we could stand!
We had fun in the bounce house from Jumping for Joy Inflatables, played with games provided by Maple Crest Middle School, and enjoyed all of the new amenities of Meridian Park’s playground thanks to the City of Kokomo Parks and Recreation Department. If you missed it, that’s OK! There will be other opportunities for you to join with us in the next 50-plus days (depending on when you’re reading this article).
I can tell you a few events we have coming up, but plan on following us on social media so you can get the most up-to-date information.
1. Christmas in July – I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s still going on all month! This is a great opportunity for you or your family to help those adults we serve each and every day. This virtual event doesn’t cost you any more than the price of the item(s) you wish to donate. You can go to the store, you can shop online or you can donate financially so you don’t have to do either. Get more information on our Facebook page or call me (Alison Brantley) at 765-457-8273!
2. The Corner Décor Gift Store – This doesn’t “just” go along with our birthday celebration, but it is exciting! If you’ve never been to the downtown gift store, 127 N. Buckeye St., you’ve been missing out. Very soon we will have bath bombs, scented wax melts, and candles. Not just any candles, though, candles that smell like coffee and are in large coffee mugs! How fun! All of these items are made by the adults we serve (with supervision/help from our wonderful staff), and the proceeds go back to the people and program who make them.
3. Athletes for All Abilities – This event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8. It will be toward the very end of our celebration, but mark your calendars now because it was so fun last year! Indiana University Kokomo’s baseball team hits the field in a scrimmage at 10 a.m. that day. Then, starting around 12:30 p.m. our persons served will each team up with an IUK baseball player and work as a team. They will bat together, run together, and field together all in the name of showing the college players and the community that there are athletes with all abilities out there, and they are all to be celebrated and appreciated. This free event is open to you, and Coca-Cola Kokomo will be set up with cold refreshments.
Birthdays don’t have to be a drag. They don’t have to be something we dread as we get older. Each year you accomplish so much that deserves to be celebrated – even if you don’t recognize it. Eventually, if you’re like us, you’ll get to 60 years. You may have even passed us up already, and that’s awesome! Congrats to you! If you’re not there yet, I hope you change your way thinking about the upcoming years and how you look at them. If you want to see what celebrating your birthday should look like, remember to follow us on social media. We are SO excited to celebrate (we even bought party hats), and hope you’ll come along with us on our next 60 year adventure! #60t060
