A tentative agreement has been reached between the Kokomo Teachers’ Association and the Kokomo School Corporation.

In accordance with newly-enacted state legislation, the final tentative agreement will be posted online on the Kokomo School Corporation website on Oct. 31, and a tentative agreement public hearing will be conducted as part of the Board of School Trustees’ regular monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 4.

“I am grateful for the time and effort that representatives of the Kokomo Teachers’ Association and administrators of the Kokomo School Corporation made to reach a tentative agreement for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years,” School Board President Cristi Brewer-Allen said. “I also am pleased that raises for our teachers, along with other benefits, are included in this tentative agreement. Our teachers deserve it.”

The newly-enacted state legislation sets guidelines for the Board of School Trustees to conduct a vote to formally approve the contract at a public meeting no sooner than 72 hours after the tentative agreement public hearing (Nov. 4) and no later than Nov. 15. The specific date and time for that board public meeting to approve the contract has not been finalized.

“Our teachers and Kokomo community members now understand that teacher pay across Indiana remains at levels below states that border Indiana, and Indiana teacher pay ranks near the bottom nationally," Board Vice President Karen Sosbe explained. “To enhance teacher salaries to appropriate competitive levels, we must all continue to work with our teachers to advocate for increased funding, as well as support, for public education in Indiana from our elected State leaders.”
