The XF is Jaguar's midsize sedan, slotted above the XE and below the recently discontinued full-size XJ. This current second-gen model launched for the 2016 model year, and the model line gained a wagon variant for 2018. The XF competes with other midsize luxury cars including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Lexus GS, and BMW 5 Series.
What We Think
The XF is a gorgeous, more sporting alternative to the Mercedes-Benz E-Classes and Audi A6s of the world. Part of that emphasis on driving leads to a suspension on the stiffer side and middling fuel economy, but when we see that stunning bodywork in the driveway, those disadvantages don't bother us as much.
Jaguar's midsizer has great balance as it dances down a winding road, though we found ourselves seeking more grip from the standard tires when driving at the limit. The interior is plenty spacious and even the sedan has plenty of cargo space, but that wouldn't stop us from opting for the rare and special XF Sportbrake wagon.
If you're looking for something different than your coworkers' BMWs, Benzes, and Audis, the XF is an athletic stunner that's unlikely to have you wishing you went German.
Performance and Fuel Economy
The XF offers two versions of its turbocharged inline-four, as well as the option of a supercharged V-6. Most models employ a 2.0-liter turbo-four badged 25t that produces 247 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, but a 30t version of that engine makes 296 hp and 295 lb-ft. Jaguar says RWD XFs with each engine will hit 60 in 6.4 and 5.7 seconds, respectively. Both versions of the turbo-four are mated to an eight-speed automatic that sends power to just the rears, or all four wheels. Four-cylinder XFs are EPA-rated at 22-25/31-34 mpg city/highway, with RWD 25t models delivering the best numbers.
Top-spec XFs are built exclusively with a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 and AWD. The engine develops an impressive 380 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, and last time we tested one, an XF S reached 60 in 5.0 seconds flat. Fuel economy takes a slight hit, though; the XF S delivers 20/28 mpg.
The XF hasn't been tested by the IIHS or the NHTSA, but it does offer active safety tech. All models come standard with automatic emergency braking, and higher trims include blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, driver condition monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Utility (Cargo Space and Interior Room)
Every XF seats five with 41.5 inches of legroom up front and 37.2 inches in the back seat. Cargo volume measures 17.8 cubic feet, but if you need more space and still want an XF, worry not. Jag will sell you an XF Sportbrake wagon that has 31.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats.
In the center console of every XF sits a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for 2020. All models except the XF Premium feature integrated navigation, and the Checkered Flag edition boasts a 12.0-inch configurable digital instrument cluster.
